Naples
2012 Regatta Report
By Dick Hedderick
The Naples New Year Regatta was host to 32 EC-12s on January
14 & 15, 2012. It was
great to see a large turnout again! Running two fleets under the promotion/relegation
system there were 18 boats on the line in each fleet. Skippers were seeded
initially into
two fleets using the National EC-12 seeding system, eliminating the need
for time
consuming seeding heats.
The weather on Saturday morning was a cool 50
degrees with shifty winds blowing out
of the North at 10-15. Starting off with B-rigs and eyes tearing from
the wind, skippers
faced a challenge going to the first mark. Many skippers missed the first
mark or fell
below the lay line on their first starboard approach. By noon the wind
eased to 5-10 and
skippers had sorted things out. The afternoon was nice A-rig conditions.
The weather on
Sunday started just cold at 40 degrees, but the wind was a pleasant 5-10.
By 11 AM, the
wind had built to near B-rig conditions, but most skippers endured with
the A-rig till
racing ended at 12:30.
Alan Perkins put on an amazing display of starting,
boat handling, and catching the
shifts. After 17 races and with 2 throw outs, Alan had 7 firsts and only
31 points.
The competition in the rest of the top ten was very tight. Positions
changed often as
skippers faired well, but then judged a shift wrong and the fleet passed
them by. The
next several positions were separated by only a few points.
Many thanks
to RD Bud Cassidy, and several other Naples Model Yacht Club members.
Jack Wubbe did scoring and provided timely printed results. Bob Harlan
did a Herculean
job of launching boats both days. That was the sailing...many, many
thanks to Laura
and Frankie Novak for hosting more than 50 people in their home for a
Friday night
Party. The party and dinner Saturday night provided a great opportunity
for the
fellowship this group provides. See you all next year, January 12&13,
2013.
