Palm Beach Gardens Valentine's
Regatta Report With sailors from Michigan, Georgia and most of the "usual suspects" from around the state of Florida, we had a full house. We had two sailors from the U.K. and even one who came over from Marsh Harbour, Bahamas! On Saturday morning we were greeted with winds from the North East at about five knots and as the morning wore on they became due East to about ten knots. The courses where set with a long first leg to promote some separation before attaining the weather mark. Sailing in both fleets was close and only a few points separated the field in both fleets at the end of Day One! Alan Perkins led the Gold fleet while Dick Reinke topped the Silver group by a mere point. We all gathered at Ken Wade's local favorite, Paddy Mac's
Irish Pub and Eatery, for some scuttlebutt, libations, good food and as
the Irish call it "good Craic" (Crack or craic
is "fun, enjoyment, abandonment, or lighthearted mischief; often
in the context of drinking or music.") After a brief skipper’s meeting ,the Silver fleet hit the water and we were off to the second day of racing as the wind filled from the North West. The sailing was still very close with the exception of Joe Phillips who just hammered the Silver group with consistant sailing. No matter how crowded the line would get at any certain spot, his red #71 would stick it’s bow out, get clear air and be gone! Just an awesome display of light air sailing and great overall tactics. The Gold fleet, on the other hand, was a cat fight! The top five skippers were in an exceptional battle all morning and when the dust settled, the "Ratbag," Alan Perkins came out on top of the fray. Alan sailed very consistantly and showed that’s what it takes to win at this level! Trophies were present to the top four skippers of each fleet. Kelli Greer had provided some nice etched glassware sets for each postion. Thank You's go out to the members of the Association for coming to Palm Beach Gardens for the event. Kudo's also go out to all the members and wives of PBGMYS for hosting guest sailors, feeding the masses, and of course, running a smoothly run regatta. At any one time we had at least a dozen members of the host club working the lines and bouys along with scoring, manning the food tables and other duties. All of this help takes the pressure off of any one individual and that makes the weekend fun!
