Punta Gorda "Holiday Regatta" Report
Dick Hedderick takes the win and the R7C
By Gib Loesel

The EC 12 Holiday & Region 7 Championship Regatta was hosted by Sun Coast Model Sailing Club and to borrow a few words from the C/S Joe Walter’s report “What a fantastic regatta down in Punta Gorda. Art Hawes and company did a wonderful job of running the event and giving us some really great courses despite having to chase the wind a little. We had to move from one side of the lake after lunch on Saturday when the wind went north. Sunday the wind was stronger out of the North which gave us plenty of great racing on a much cooler and cloudier day. There was some really fun sailing with plenty of position changes and very little protesting”.

After chasing the wind referred to above and eight races completed Dick Hedderick was in the lead with 27 points followed by Joe Walter (33), Alan Perkins (43), Jack Ward (47), Steve Pfeil (50) Jake Leo (56) and Bob Greer (57).

When the dawn broke on Sunday it turned out to be a near perfect racing day with steady winds 5 to 8 a nice cool cloud cover and seven more races completed. After seven more races the top five positions changed only slightly with Perkins moving to fourth and Ward advancing to third. Congratulations to Dick Hedderick on his win and also winning the Region 7 Championship! The Ancient Mariner Award went to Fred Pfeil (a very young 80), way to go Fred!!

Worthy of an Honorable Mention was the performance Al Dion turned in on Sunday after his boat broke down on Saturday … a mere 18 points VS the winners 29.
