St. Petersburg
Regatta Report There were 19 skippers sailing at St. Pete, and the regatta used the promotion – relegation system. The forecast for Saturday called for cool temperatures (upper 60’s) with a stiff breeze out of the Northwest. Arriving at the crack of dawn the Race Director Team was pleased to see that the weatherman “finally got it right” (I can say that because my older brother is a former weatherman). The RDT set up a picture perfect windward-leeward course, NNW winds clocking between 8-10 mph and waited for the contestants to arrive. Over the next hour, Mother Nature decided she had a different plan for the day, swinging the wind to the NNE and lessening. Quick change of course, and the regatta was set to begin, the major change being that the fleet was sailing away from shore, making the windward rounding a challenge. We sailed 5 races in the morning, broke for lunch and as if to say-“just kidding”, Mother Nature, swung the wind back to the NNW and freshened the breeze.Strong and at times, gusty winds made for an exciting afternoon. Dinner was close by, after a day of sailing, there were many great conversations and NCAA basketball games to watch, and if a Badger fan, even more fun. Sunday morning welcomed the skippers with ENE breezes, again forcing the RDT to sail the fleet away from the shore. After adjusting to the distance of the windward mark, and minor adjustments to the course, the fleet did an outstanding job of sailing a many heats with few mishaps. Final standing resulted in a tie between Bob “Doc” Grier and Jon Luscomb. The tie breaker, based on the number of first (1st) places going to Doc Greer with 3, while Jon had 2. Results
