The Villages 2019 Gator Regatta Report
Perkins starts new season off with win
by John Goldsworthy

Sailing commenced a little late Saturday morning as we all waited patiently for the wind to make its appearance. Racing started with the B Fleet around 10AM in light, variable conditions and a few drops of rain. Throughout the day, some got lucky and found the wind while other good sailors did not.

Saturday evening, we all met at Arnold Palmer Legends Country Club for an outstanding dinner. The competitors were able to review the scoreboard, check their standing and plot their strategy for Sunday’s races.

Sunday brought far improved sailing conditions. The wind was from the SSW at about 10Kts, gusting to 14Kts, allowing the RD to set a good and challenging course. As the morning progressed, many of the skippers changed to their B rigs. These races demonstrated a true spirit of comradery. When boats were disabled – several skippers would offer parts, advice and encouragement to get the skipper back on the water as quickly as possible. Two of the skippers were sailing their first regatta and though they didn’t win – they told me they had a great time.
