February Club Series Report 2009 John Bottensek gets 6 out of 12 bullets to win the kickoff regatta of the 2009 season. The weather was not looking good for this February 15th event, but we were lucky in that the rain held off and the wind built with each heat and came pretty much straight down the shore. Because the rain was threatening, we set up a short course with the start line in the middle. Then we set up the tent for everyone to stand under when the sky opened up. Fortunately in never came down and we got in 12 very nice heats. As the wind built, we added a leg to the course to make the heats go a little longer. In the lighter air of the earlier heats, the distances between first and last where about the length of one leg. But as the wind increased, the boats got closer and closer. Several heats saw all the boats finish with 20-30 seconds from first to last. Many finishes could not be called until the very last second. Martin Gray deserves the most improved skipper award if we had one to give. He put together some very nice heats including two 2nd place finishes. One of them he edged out John B who got 3rd. Baron was steady and held on to 2nd place over all. He got 4 bullets in the effort. Tom Germer and Tom Phillips had a seasaw battle for the 3rd spot with Tom P taking the overal score, but Tom G edged him out with his throw out. John Garver was sailing very well with his new pink boat, but some battery and bungy cord issues forced him to sit out a few too many heats. Martin Gray will be RD for the March regatta.
