June Club Series Report The forecast for the June Club Series Regatta was for 12 knots of wind out of the WSW. Down on the water the wind was clocked between 5 and 13 knots with the average being 8 to 10 knots. Several skippers decided on B-rigs while others braved their A-rigs. There were times when both rigs were the right choice and when both were the wrong choice. In the end, the slightly better choice was to go with the A-rig. While they were overpowered in the puffs, they did well in the downwind legs. As the wind speed dropped off in the later heats, those with A-rigs faired much better than those with B-rigs. Tom Phillips did a great job as RD. He set up a fair course that challenged the skippers with tough upwind legs and lots of tacks and lead changes. Mark rounds were clean for the most part. John B had a slow start with a 6th and 4th place finish in the first two heats, but after that he posted 6 bullets, including 5 in a row. His other finishes were three 2nds and a 3rd. The 6th place finish was his throw out. Tony Rieck and Baron Bremer battled each other hard for 2nd place. In the end, Tony's A-rig won out over Baron's B-rig. Of course skill had a lot to do with it as well. Joe Walter was a distant 4th, also sailing with a B-rig and Tom Germer rounded out the top 5 with his B-rig. Newcomers Brant and his father Rob DeAngelis sailed pretty well for their first time racing an EC-12. Rob would have to leave early though so Michael stepped in to finish the regatta with the club boat.Steve Buchanan, Martin Gray and Grant Ward each put in some very good heats while Skip Miller had boat trouble before he could even get started. In all, there was some very good racing. Lots of lead changes. Great tacking duels. And plenty of action at the marks. The best part was the sailing was pretty clean, which always makes for a lot of fun on the water Tom Germer will be RD for the July regatta.
