May Club Series Report Baron Bremer took the win in impressive style for the May points regatta. At first it looked like he and Joe Walter would be locked in a duel to the end. They were tied after six heats with each having 3 bullets, two 2nds, and a 3rd. But Baron turned on the speed and won four of the last six heats to claim the win. Joe finished outside of top three only once and John Bottensek was very strong in the second half of the regatta, taking the other two bullets and only once finishing below third place. Skip Miller sailed well considering his handicap of not have a B-rig in the strong winds. Tom Germer had a couple of good heats, but seemed to struggle a bit. Getting the tuning right on the B-rig in the high winds was a challenge for everyone. Jason Hastings and Murray McQuaid did alright considering their inexperience in 15 knots of wind. Murray led the way around the course in one heat only to suffer a broach at the final leeward mark which allowed the fleet to catch him. It was heart breaking to see that happen. Jason had to leave early due to an appointment. John Garver drove down from St. Mary's but never got started as his boat broke while he was launching it. A huge gust hit him at the water's edge and popped his drum line below decks. Tony Rieck did a great job as RD. The course was perfect and he kept things moving smoothly. Considering the wind, it was great that there was no damage or rig failures and only a couple of bumps. Everyone accepted their penalties in stride and the only screaming we heard was the excitement at the very close finishes. Baron will be RD next month.
